FMCSA Extends Policy Changes for

Drivers Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

Expired Medical Certifications & Driver’s

License Policies Laxed until Sept. 30

July 22, 2020

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has extended two COVID-19 notices relating to medical certifications and driver’s licenses. Click here to view the notification.

The notices are effective March 24, 2020 through September 30, 2020.

MEDICAL CERTIFICATIONS

Drivers may continue to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) with an expired medical certificate under certain conditions; such as that the certificate was valid as of February 29, 2020 and the driver has not been diagnosed with a disqualifying medical condition since their last medical exam.

DRIVER’S LICENSES

A driver may continue to operate a CMV provided it “was valid on February 29, 2020, and expired on or after March 1, 2020, and the driver is otherwise qualified to drive under 391.11.”
