Denver Metro Retiree Chapter Meeting Minutes
August 23, 2014
President Scott Morrow called the meeting to order at 10:01 AM. 14 members, three candidates plus Tina Desautels were in attendance. Secretary/Treasurer Lew Roman took the minutes.
Scott was excited to announce that our Charter has been awarded, making us an official chapter.
The Finance/Budget Committee was appointed: Alex Brown, Scott Morrow and Lew Roman.
An Organizing Committee consisting of Jim Deden, Ron Gorman and Scott Morrow was set to try and increase membership and participation.
Legislative Director Marty Wisniewski introduced each of the candidates speaking at the meeting, in turn.
Joe Neguse, Candidate for Colorado Secretary of State led things off. He is a lawyer working with Labor. His main objective is to reverse Scott Gessler’s attempts to make voter registration more difficult. He also champions the idea of pre-registration for 17 year olds.
Steve O'Dorisio, Candidate for Adams County Commissioner, District 4, followed. He specified four points for his campaign:
1) Quality of life
2) Economic Development
3) Stand-Up for Adams County (regarding transportation, infrastructure, etc.)
4) An Open and Inviting Government.
Representative Joe Salazar, State HD 31, continued. He stressed that he is "unapologetic" for supporting unions, the disadvantaged, for getting the right things done and for fighting against eminent domain by private corporations. He supports good water quality and safe fracking.
Measures to support all three candidates were passed unanimously.
Tina Desautels DMAL Legislative Director, spoke next. She stressed that NOW the main force is politics. We need to beat candidates such as Cory Gardner and Bob Beauprez. Fight for our rights. We must let all politicians know who we are AND that we are their bosses.
The Right to Know Colorado, label GMO petition circulated at the last meeting received enough valid signatures and is now ballot measure 105 in the November election.
Lew Roman read the minutes from the July 12, 2014 meeting, and a motion to approve said minutes was unanimously approved.
Greg Livigni’s report of the National Convention was tabled until the next meeting.
Marty Wisniewski gave the Legislative Report. He, again, challenged us to volunteer two hours for the candidate of our choosing. We are not under the Hatch Act, so he will obtain yard signs for those who would like them.
A motion to thank Phil Desautels for his efforts to get our Chapter started was unanimously approved.
Marty’s name was submitted as our representative to Judy Beard, National APWU Retiree Director, for committee work.
The next meeting is scheduled at the DMAL Union hall on October 18, 2014 at 10:00 A.M.
Scott adjourned the meeting at 12:34 PM.
